McCann’s role on the A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross scheme included both enabling works and main works to support the delivery of the motorway communications infrastructure. The enabling works involved trenching, duct installation, chamber construction, cabinet bases and associated reinstatement to prepare the route for the technology installation. The main works then focused on delivering the communications infrastructure required for CCTV, ANPR, emergency roadside telephones and other motorway communications equipment, including cabling, earthing, testing and commissioning.

Reinforced Concrete foundations
McCann delivered a series of Reinforced Concrete foundations to support the installation of CCTV masts and camera equipment across the scheme. Working closely with the project team, McCann provided temporary works design support, helping to ensure safe, efficient and compliant construction throughout the programme.

Our team undertook the complete construction process, from enabling works, excavation and groundworks through to the installation of steel reinforcement, concrete placement and high-quality finish. Reinforcement cages were fabricated and assembled off-site to ensure consistent quality, reduce on-site labour, and enhance health and safety. By securely tying steel reinforcement bars (rebar) to create robust structural formwork it allows us to achieve the required strength and durability within the concrete base. Careful planning and quality control throughout the construction process ensured that all foundations met the project’s stringent technical and safety requirements.
The successful delivery of these specialist reinforced concrete foundations alongside the communications and technology infrastructure works demonstrates McCann’s ability to provide a fully integrated service for its clients. This project showcased our capability to deliver technically complex civil engineering works safely, efficiently and to a high standard, providing added value to the wider scheme and supporting the successful installation of critical motorway technology assets.

Adapting shift patterns
As part of its delivery of the A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross scheme, McCann worked collaboratively with Costain to develop practical solutions that improved both project efficiency and workforce wellbeing. Due to the scheme’s remote location in Cornwall, bespoke shift patterns were introduced to minimise travel demands and support employee wellbeing while maintaining programme performance. The ducting team operated on compressed hours in a four-day working week, while civil engineering and communications resources adopted compressed hours in a nine-day working pattern over a fortnight, reducing the frequency of long-distance travel and improving productivity on site. The variation in shift patterns between the teams were tailored to the efficiencies in the teams and programme requirements.
The successful delivery of the A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross scheme highlights McCann’s capability to deliver large-scale motorway communications and infrastructure projects. Working collaboratively with Costain, our team provided a fully integrated solution, combining specialist technology communications infrastructure with our civil engineering capabilities to support one of Cornwall’s most significant transport upgrades. Through the safe and efficient delivery of critical roadside technology and supporting infrastructure, McCann contributed to the creation of a safer and more reliable road network. The project reflects the breadth of our capabilities and our commitment to delivering high-quality infrastructure solutions that support the long-term needs of the UK’s strategic road network.
