Efficient communication systems for critical infrastructure

In a world increasingly reliant on efficient communications, McCann are proud to be at the forefront of how systems are designed, installed and managed. With teams operating in every corner of the UK, we take the lead on critical infrastructure that improves visibility and communications, monitors road conditions, reduces congestion and allows commuters to stay safe.

  • Technology Civils – McCann offer all associated civils elements, including the installation of Duct, Chambers, Roadside Control Cabinets, Paving, Steps and Handrails to offer a full communication technology package.
  • CCTV Sites – Safety on highways is a key priority. Traffic monitoring, using CCTV systems, is one way to ensure that road users are protected. McCann installs full CCTV sites, including cameras, associated cabling and ducting, installation of CCTV masts and foundations.
  • Variable Message Signs (VMS) – Installation of fixed and temporary Variable Message Signs (VMS), which provide dynamic and versatile communication to motorists in real time and are an integral part of modern traffic management. Our teams have installed bespoke VMS systems on overhead gantries, portable bases/trailers and roadside structures.
  • Emergency Roadside Telephones (ERT) – Emergency Roadside Telephones are located for emergency use and are accessible, when needed, on highways and connected to traffic control centres or police control rooms. McCann has installed ERT systems on the M27, M6, M56, M60 and as part of our works on the M1 and M5 for National Highways as part of the National Emergency Area Retrofit (NEAR) Schemes.
  • MIDAS radars – Motorway Incident Detection and Automatic Signalling (MIDAS) use’s inductive loop, radar and magnetometer-based sensors to detect vehicle presence, classification and speed. Algorithms then determine the flow and occupancy of lanes, providing warning of hazards by setting signals in advance of incidents.
  • Stopped Vehicle Detection (SVD) systems – Radar units installed on the sides of highways that automatically detect when a vehicle stops on the hard shoulder, emergency area, or in any lane of the motorway or tunnel, allowing help to be deployed quickly. Our expert teams have installed and upgraded SVD systems on major motorways across the UK, including the M6, M25, M1 and M5.
  • Weather Stations / ESS Environmental Sensor Stations – Mast-mounted sensors line the strategic highway network to provide statistics on air temperature, precipitation, humidity, wind speed and visibility.
