Our Culture

McCann is committed to building a workplace and culture that reflects the communities we serve. Guided by our values: Loyalty, Integrity, Teamwork and Equality, we aim to create an environment where everyone feels respected and empowered to succeed.

Equality, diversity and inclusion

We encourage and promote equal opportunities and support our workforce and customers irrespective of possessing one or more of the multiple protected characteristics (age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation) or indeed any characteristic. McCann celebrates diversity and welcomes everyone!

We aim to become an employer of choice by continually working to embed and strengthen our diverse, equal and inclusive culture into our everyday practice, policies and procedures, both internally and externally.

Through demonstration of our passion and best practice, we want to use our voice to promote positive change and contribute to positive wellbeing and quality of life for our workforce, their families and everyone we work with.

Key focus areas

Inclusive
representation
and recruitment

To increase diversity within the construction industry, we have critically reviewed our hiring practises to reflect a more inclusive process. We’ve reviewed our job descriptions, introduced diverse hiring panels and ensure that we use inclusive language in recruitment.

McCann has been working on changing the industry’s perspective and initiating the recruitment process by actively encouraging school-aged children to consider a career in construction. We have increased the number of careers and skills fairs we attend and, where possible, have ensured an equal gender representation to promote and encourage greater diversity in the construction industry. We are hopeful that by engaging with underrepresented talent pipelines, schools and community partners that we will see more diverse talent in the industry.

Supply chain and
industry influence

To amplify change, we extend our EDI commitments through our partners and actively encourage diversity amongst our supply chain for example, we open our Listen and Learn sessions to everyone within the industry. During Autism Acceptance Month (observed in April), we hosted an important Listen and Learn session with professional keynote speaker, HR Analyst and neurodiversity advocate, Charlie Hart, and over 80 members of our team and supply chain, as she shared insights on Neurodivergence, Autism and ADHD and how to build a neuro-inclusive workplace.

Leadership
accountability

To foster genuine diversity in the workplace, it is crucial to implement change at every level. An aspect of our EDI strategy is to hold our leadership team accountable through inclusive leadership development for all line managers, as well as reverse mentoring to address bias and expand perspectives.

Inclusive
culture and
belonging

We foster an inclusive environment for all by utilising our community networks, inclusion surveys, lived experience storytelling, and neurodiversity and inclusive behaviours training to increase engagement, retention and wellbeing. McCann established dynamic community groups, which are central to our commitment to creating an environment where we all belong.

These community groups actively work to foster a supportive and inclusive culture where everyone feels valued, respected and empowered to thrive, regardless of background or identity. These communities create powerful platforms for education, advocacy and influence, ensuring that inclusivity isn’t just an ideal but a lived experience for all our employees.

All employees are encouraged to join any of the inclusion networks as members of the represented group or as active allies. Our members and allies have an essential role to play in ensuring an inclusive and intersectional culture.

Our networks are sponsored by our Strategic Highways Director, Catherine Brookes, to ensure their action plans are heard and progressed at the highest levels of business.

Gender Pay Gap

2025 is McCann’s first year reporting the Gender Pay Gap report, and it sets the foundation for how we measure progress, hold ourselves accountable and take meaningful action. You can view our Gender Pay Gap Report here.
