Phase 1 – S278 and Ditch Works:

We commenced the S278 Works on Rissington Road by installing Chapter 8 compliant 2-way traffic management. This allowed us to remove existing trees, foliage, signage, street furniture and height barriers, ready for the main works to start.

The original car park had both the entrance and exit points accessed via a large-grassed roundabout. Having both the access and egress points so close to each other meant that, at busy times, the car park and surrounding roads became very congested. The new plan removed this roundabout, widening the entrance and exit points, creating new capacity over the former roundabout location.

To enable the entrance to be widened, we had to excavate the current watercourse, over-pumping the stream for 6 weeks to allow for the banks to be widened and the works to be completed. During these works, new outfalls and headwalls were installed on top of stone platform bases. The new headwalls were constructed by a McCann Operative out of local Cotswold stone masonry.

Alongside the works to the watercourse, we constructed a new footpath from the car park into the main public footpath, as well as the installation of kerbing and surfacing in the existing carriageways. We also utilised members of our strategic supply chain to install new road markings.

Phase 2 – Main Car Park Works:

While works were continuing with the S278 improvements, our skilled and experienced teams completed bespoke surveys on the existing car parks, conducting trial holes to understand where the existing services were, enabling us to fully isolate these. We installed new drainage across the whole of the car park, including the new areas, ensuring that all rainwater is fed into the outfall system. As part of the main car park works, we also installed the ducting, chambers and feeder pillars for 12 new LED streetlights, as well as future-proofing the site with the required infrastructure for 8 EV charging bays.

Once all these works were completed, we resurfaced the entire car park using a combination of permeable and non-permeable surfacing. This approach ensured that we maintained pavement durability, as well as providing a bespoke anti-ponding solution. We also ensured that all handrails around the car park’s public toilet were reinstated, as well as litter bins, cycle rails, blue badge holder signs and height restriction barriers. Blue railings were installed to ensure that pedestrians and cars were appropriately segregated.

The project delivered a range of practical and environmental benefits for Rissington Car Park and the wider public. It met key objectives, including increasing parking capacity and improving accessibility,  wider bays, adding more disabled parking spaces, and reducing water ponding across the main areas, thereby lowering ongoing maintenance needs. The new design also includes infrastructure for expanding EV charging capacity in the future, helping future-proof the site against rising demand for electric vehicle support. Additionally, the installation of EV charging points and modern LED lighting has helped reduce both the project’s and the car park’s overall carbon footprint.

McCann successfully delivered a modern, accessible, and future-proofed car park at Rissington Road, enhancing capacity, safety, and sustainability for over 300,000 annual visitors. Completed ahead of the deadline, the project improved traffic flow, drainage, and accessibility, while integrating EV charging infrastructure and energy-efficient lighting. The result is a durable, low-maintenance facility that meets current needs and supports Cotswold District Council’s long-term transport goals.

This project stands as a strong example of McCann’s ability to deliver complex infrastructure improvements that balance user experience, sustainability, and operational efficiency.
