Sport England track lighting – Osterley
We undertook the design and build lighting contract as Principal Contractor for London Borough of Hounslow’s Osterley athletics track. The site presented unique planning challenges: it’s on Heathrow flight paths, close to a major road and near local residents, so light pollution was an issue. The project was part of the Sport England Inspired Facilities framework, which required the design to meet tough energy efficiency targets, and featured wireless control allowing leisure centre managers to control the lighting remotely.
Our low level lighting solution complied with the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) LG 4 guidance, BS EN 12193:2007 Sports lighting and also meets Sport England’s requirements. The cabling network we installed allows sections of the track to be switched on and off independently. This provided further energy savings when only one part of the track was required to be illuminated.
Delivered on time and to budget, our design provides a low energy, fit-for-purpose level of light for the sports track; it conforms to the Civil Aviation Authority’s requirements and also satisfies local planning regulations. The result has been to extend the hours of operation of the track throughout the year, enhancing the reach of athletics into clubs and schools within the borough.
