Quantity Surveyor
We are recruiting for a Quantity Surveyor for our national business team. The role will be based at our head office in Nottingham with travel throughout the region.
Initial works include street lighting renewal, signage installation, general civil engineering, and technology works with the position taking on the commercial lead in all relevant fields. An excellent understanding of NEC form of contract is a must.
Duties and responsibilities
- Management and control of commercial aspects of the projects.
- Measurement, contract administration, record keeping, maintaining key schedules for information and procurement, tendering and placement.
- Direct interface / liaison with the client’s delivery team.
- Responsibility for the quantity surveying functions.
- Procurement and management of subcontracts.
- Identification and management of change control.
- Use of and input in the business costing system.
- Management and accurate maintenance of cost reporting / forecasting (internal and client reporting). Provision of accurate and timely commercial reports.
- To maximise profitability working within the requirements of the conditions of a target cost contract and others as required.
- Provision of commercial expertise to the business and project teams
- Maintain commercial information relevant to the contract.
- Subsequent responsibility through to final account conclusion.

Quantity Surveyor – Telecoms
We are recruiting for a Quantity Surveyor for our national telecoms commercial team. The role will be based at our project office in Nottingham with travel throughout the region.
Works include all commercial duties required of a quantity surveyor for the telecoms works, with the position working alongside the senior quantity surveyors for the specific scheme, as well as the managing quantity surveyor. An excellent understanding of NEC form of contract is a must.
DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

We are looking to recruit a Civils Supervisor to monitor multiple sites, responsible for overseeing field activities and resources ensuring site safety and compliance whilst maintaining the highest levels of excellence, productivity and performance.
Duties and key responsibilities
The ideal candidate will possess strong management and negotiation skills, high attention to detail and able to resolve complex conflict as well as high level organisation and time management abilities.
To help us build the future, your role will consist of: –
- Completing daily audits (MWorker – live and retro), analysing and feeding back results to operational managers including, Project Manager, and taking action where required.
- Ensuring works are to the correct specifications including documenting and taking pictures, where required
- Having overall responsibility for the site set-up and ongoing maintenance, with a strong focus on NRSWA compliance
- Understanding permit/noticing requirements and ensure these are adhered too
- Working closely with our client’s field operations teams
- Dealing with members of public in a polite and professional manner
- Reviewing plans and ensure all documentation is available as required (utility stats, clear engineering drawings, etc)
- Timely communication and updates with the Management team, including reporting of any changes or deviations from plans

Within this role you will be expected to independently produce detailed programmes using either MSProject or Primavera P6 to ensure all daily and future works are programmed and scheduled to the required level of detail to allow operations teams to procure and schedule all activities.

This will require quantity take offs from drawings to determine activity durations. Reinstatement Team Operatives – Nottingham
Fixed Term (3-5 years with view to extend)
Due to our continued strong growth across the UK, we now have a number of fantastic opportunities available at J McCann & Co. to work across a sizable full fibre installation contract in partnership with CityFibre in Nottingham. This position is full-time across a 3-5 year works programme with the potential for further work across other areas of business including construction, utilities and telecoms. There has never been a more exciting time to join the team!
Duties & responsibilities
Within this role you will be part of a two person team completing tarmac and resurfacing works. One member of the team will be required to operate a 7.5 tonne hot box carrying tarmac and keeping it at the correct temperature. A Category C1 licence is required for the driver as well as CSCS qualification for labourers.
Essential Competencies
- Category C1 Licence – required for the driver
- CSCS – required for labourers
- Valid NRSWA street works operative units 1-9
- First Aid & Abrasive Wheels & Manual Handling (this can be arranged upon employment)
- Full UK HGV Driving Licence – required for driver

Due to our continued strong growth across the UK, we now have a number of fantastic opportunities available at J McCann & Co. to work across a sizeable full fibre installation contract in partnership with CityFibre in Nottingham.
This position is full-time across a 3-5 year works programme with the potential for further work across other areas of business including construction, utilities and telecoms.
As a fibre splicer, you will play a key role in helping CityFibre and McCann achieve the delivery of full fibre to approximately 110,000 premises in Nottingham. You will be responsible for splicing and testing on CityFibre’s new network to specific customer specifications. This will include external working.

Duties & responsibilities
You will help to build the Future of Fibre by:
- Carrying out risk assessments prior to work
- Installing, splicing and securing fibre distribution points either above/underground or mounted on telegraph poles
- Interpreting job packs and fibre allocation tables
- Installing splice splitters in broadband cabinets using automatic fusion splicer
- Photographing completed fibre distribution points both inside the closure and externally, showing position on the chamber or pole
- Working safely using gate guards and signage as appropriate
- Carrying out acceptance testing using OTDR, light source and power meter
Essential Competencies
- Proven track record of fibre optic splicing
- Conversant with principles and standards for Passive Optical Networks
- Knowledge and experience of working to BT Openreach standards and processes for underground safety, working at height and within confined spaces
- NSRWA Unit 2 signage, guarding and lighting
Desirable competencies
- First Aid & Abrasive Wheels & Manual Handling (this can be arranged upon employment)
- PIA Accreditation. SA002 (this can be arranged upon employment

Planner / Programmer – Nottingham

This position is full-time across a 3-5 year works programme with the potential for further work across other areas of business including construction, utilities and telecoms. Duties and key responsibilities
Within this role you will be expected to independently produce detailed programmes using either MSProject or Primavera P6 to ensure all daily and future works are programmed and scheduled to the required level of detail to allow operations teams to procure and schedule all activities.
The level of detail required will be down to daily street level programming for the NRSWA/Roadspace booking activities. This will require quantity take offs from drawings to determine activity durations. Regular updates and forecasts with jeopardy reports will be required using site information to ensure management is able to take a forward view and plan accordingly. The role will require a general understanding of civil engineering principles and knowledge of FTTP/Highways/Motorway contracts.
Essential Competencies
- Experience of working with Primavera or Microsoft Project
Desirable competencies
- Understanding of FTTP/Motorway/NRSWA regulations and requirements
