McCann celebrates the opening of the new Engineering and Electrical Centre at Nottingham College, supporting the next generation of talent!

On 10th September 2025, McCanns, alongside other regional and national employers, and Nottingham College, celebrated the launch of the brand-new Engineering and Electrical Centre at their Ruddington campus.

This new facility addresses the growing demand for skilled engineers in the manufacturing, electrical, installation and renewable energy industries. With the capacity to support up to 300 apprentices, the centre has four purpose-built classrooms, fully equipped engineering workshops, a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining station, advanced welding bays, and a dedicated testing laboratory, all designed to support high-quality teaching and collaborative learning.

Developed in collaboration with leading regional and national employers, including Make UK, CEMA, Charnvel, Actemium ICP, McCanns, Reckitt, and Blackburn Starling, the centre ensures curriculum and equipment are aligned with industry needs and delivers immersive, real-world training in environments that reflect the modern workplace.

Managing Director of McCann, John McCann, comments, “It’s fantastic to have a local dedicated centre here at Nottingham College, with all the purpose-made equipment and facilities. Apprentices can learn in the right conditions, setting and environment. A centre the apprentices can call home. We will get the benefit of those people and that education, leading to a better service for our customers.”

“By partnering with Nottingham College, we’re helping to train the next generation, while ensuring our customers continue to receive the very best service.”

John McCann (Managing Director), Catherine Brookes (Strategic Highways Director), Dave Fielding (Commercial Director), Kate Barratt (Social Value and EDI Manager), and Danny Tatton (Electrician and Nottingham College Apprentice Alumnus), attended the event to celebrate the opening of the centre and the incredible work everyone has contributed to the centre’s success.

McCann is proud to continue our collaboration with Nottingham College, from partnering on the development of this incredible centre, to sponsoring their apprenticeship awards, and working in the future on industry-leading apprenticeship programmes. Our Strategic Highways Director, Catherine, is also sharing her over 35 years of industry experience on the Engineering and Electrical Employer Board at Nottingham College, which is shaping opportunities for the next generation of engineers and electricians.

Speaking on the opening of the college, Lindsey Smith, Nottingham College Assistant Principal for Apprenticeships and Ruddington, said, “We’re thrilled to launch our new Engineering and Electrical Centre – a significant milestone for local industry and skills development. We’re especially grateful to our industry partners – with special recognition to CEMA, Charnvel, Actemium ICP, McCanns, Reckitt, and Blackburn Starling – whose support has been instrumental in shaping our apprenticeship programmes and technical training.

This isn’t just an investment in education; it’s a commitment to the future of technical excellence in Nottingham.”
