Toton Banks Road Infants and Nursery School receives donation from McCann for a new phonics learning programme

We’re delighted to have been able to donate £6,000 to a local school recently to cover the cost of Floppy’s Phonics – a programme designed to aid the development of reading and learning for children.

Toton Banks Road Infants and Nursery School recently reached out to McCann for a donation towards investment in a new phonics development programme – following the impact of the pandemic on children’s abilities to meet the phonics expectations of the National Curriculum.

To mitigate this impact and ensure that its children are meeting all national requirements, the school has invested in Floppy’s Phonics; a nationally recognised learning programme that stays in line with the Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) teaching principles validated by the government.

Floppy’s Phonics offers a clear progression for children to learn the required phonics content and ensures that by the end of Year 1 they have developed the skills to meet national standards.

Our Managing Director – John McCann – was eager to support the school which is local to our Nottingham head office. After being contacted by the team, we agreed to donate the £6,000 needed to purchase Floppy’s Phonics to begin the learning programme.

“McCann has become more than just a leading name in civil and electrical engineering. We’re also a company that has embedded a sense of social responsibility within our values and look to actively support the communities in which we live and work, wherever possible,”

John adds, “Our children have been some of the most heavily affected by the pandemic, so we were more than happy to make a contribution to Toton Bank Road School to support its investment into a learning programme dedicated to progressing phonic learning,”

“Phonic learning development is a vital part of a child’s learning journey to achieve the standards of the National Curriculum and ensure they have the best possible start in their educational career, ”

He continues, “High-quality education should be accessible to all children across the country, irrespective of age or background. It is from this education that they become young adults, making their mark on our world and becoming the leaders of the future.”

A spokesperson for Toton Road Banks School has expressed their gratitude to McCann for its valued support, adding, “We are overwhelmed by the generosity that McCann has shown to our school. This is absolutely amazing,”

“The difference this will make to the school and most importantly the children is truly incredible – we really cannot thank John and the team enough for this significant donation.”
