For International Women’s Day 2026, meet Heather Ankers, Training Manager at McCann
To mark International Women’s Day 2026, we’re shining a light on the people across McCann who are helping to shape the future of our industry. This year’s theme, “Give to Gain”, highlights the power of collaboration, shared knowledge, and supporting one another to create stronger teams and better outcomes.
In an industry that has traditionally been male-dominated, the voices and experiences of women working across civil engineering and construction are more important than ever. By sharing their career journeys, insights, and advice, we hope to inspire the next generation and continue building a more inclusive and supportive workplace.
In this blog, we talk to Heather Ankers, Training Manager at McCann about what International Women’s Day and the theme for 2026 means to her, she discusses her passion for developing people, mentoring young professionals and helping build a capable, future-ready workforce. Heather also reflects on the progress being made toward greater inclusion in a traditionally male-dominated industry and encourages young women to be confident and take opportunities as they arise.
Can you talk about how long you’ve worked for McCann and your career journey to getting here?
I joined McCann in 2024 as Training Manager, bringing over 20 years’ experience across construction and operational environments. My career naturally progressed into Learning & Development, where I discovered a real passion for building capability, strengthening teams and creating clear progression pathways within the industry.
What does your role involve day-to-day?
As Training Manager, I ensure our workforce remains competent, compliant and ahead of evolving industry requirements. I work across the business to strengthen capability, embed mandatory standards and develop people in line with both operational needs and future demand.
Mentoring is something I’m genuinely passionate about and that comes naturally to me. I particularly enjoy supporting young professionals, especially women entering the industry, helping them build confidence, navigate challenges and recognise their own potential.
What is it like working in the Civil Engineering and Construction Industry?
It’s fast-paced, practical and highly rewarding. You see the tangible impact of strong teams and effective leadership. While traditionally male-dominated, there is clear progress being made, with more women stepping into influential roles across the sector.
What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
For me, International Women’s Day is about progress through partnership. It’s not just about celebrating women, it’s about men and women working together to promote equality, challenge outdated perceptions and create genuine opportunity across our industry.
Real change happens when we collectively commit to building a more inclusive future.
The theme this year is “Give to Gain.” What does this mean to you?
“Give to Gain” resonates with me on a personal level. Early in my career, someone gave me an opportunity and believed in my potential, and that opportunity shaped everything I’ve gone on to achieve.
It’s a reminder that when we give people a chance, support and trust, the return is far greater than we realise. But those opportunities must be accessible to everyone, regardless of gender. When we create fair access to opportunity, we all gain as individuals, as businesses and as an industry.
What advice would you give to young women joining the industry?
Be confident in your ability and say yes to opportunities. You don’t need to have all the answers; growth comes through experience. Your perspective and skills bring real value.
How does McCann create an inclusive environment?
We work in collaboration. We all drive our culture with a genuine passion to create an environment where everyone belongs.
This has a knock-on effect on investment in development and progression. There is strong support for learning at all levels, helping individuals feel valued, empowered and equipped to succeed.
Anything else to add?
I’m proud to work for a company that genuinely supports women in leadership while recognising the realities of family life. As a working parent, that support matters.
Having the ability to build my career while raising a young family without feeling that one must come at the expense of the other makes a real difference. For many women, particularly single mums, knowing your ambition doesn’t have to be put on hold is incredibly important.
