Inspiring the next generation of STEM leaders with ‘When I Grow Up’ books
We have recently purchased 250 copies of ‘When I Grow Up’, a storybook which aims to inspire and engage young people with STEM subjects with the intention of making the books available to children within our local communities and amongst our staff and their families.
‘When I Grow Up’ follows twins Harry and Amy who are about to take part in a competition as part of their school’s careers day. By participating in engineering activities throughout the story, Harry and Amy consider which profession they might want to pursue in the future and if a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematical (STEM) is where their passion lies. They are shown that without the hard work of the men and women in the construction industry, many other jobs would not be possible.
The storybook is intended to inspire children of primary school age to become engaged with STEM subjects from an early age, demonstrating the value that careers across these subjects have as well as their impact on wider society.
Ensuring the longevity of industries across the STEM network, and the professions which keep these industries turning, starts with the engagement of young people and children – something which McCann has always been keen to support.
We recently offered the storybooks to staff across our company for their children, grandchildren and young relatives, while also donating a number of books to local schools in and around our community.
Jenna Holmes, Pre-Construction Manager at McCann, is looking forward to seeing the books in circulation across our networks and the impact that they will have on the career choices of future generations.
“As a company, we are committed to social value initiatives and making a positive impact on the communities in which our teams live and work across the country – particularly when these initiatives can have a positive influence on children and young people in society,”
“When I Grow Up is a delightful story which captures children’s imagination and aims to open their minds to the exciting pathways that they could pursue with a career in STEM. Books such as these are an important way of inspiring the next generation of engineers, researchers and analysts to take to helm and evolve our ever-changing industries as we constantly seek to build a better future,”
She adds, “I’m looking forward to seeing the difference that can be made to children in our local communities and who knows, it may even inspire the next generation of McCann employees to join our award-winning team in the future.”
