Double nomination for McCann at 2022 Constructing Excellence East Midlands Awards

The good news keeps on coming for McCann following the news that the business has been named as a finalist in two categories at this year’s coveted Constructing Excellence East Midlands Awards.

Constructing Excellence (CE) is a “progressive membership organisation committed to improving business performance by driving innovation and best practice in the construction industry.”

The Midlands branch of CE brings together businesses from across the region to collaborate through a not-for-profit organisation which is owned and operated by its members.

Through Constructing Excellence, the construction industry benefits from major advancements through knowledge sharing, networking and close engagement with government and major public sector bodies. The network seeks to influence policy and major industry initiatives and work as a single entity to the benefit of businesses within construction.

The annual Constructing Excellence Awards celebrate best practice in the built environment, as well as businesses’ abilities to demonstrate a willingness to deliver housing, infrastructure and facilities in a collaborative and sustainable manner.

The awards are open to organisations and project teams delivering innovative projects across the East Midlands and this year’s awards dinner will take place on Thursday 9th June at The Athena in Leicester.

Award categories include Building Project of the Year, Civils Project of the Year, the Health, Safety & Wellbeing Award and the Net Zero Award. McCann has been named as a finalist in both the Health, Safety and Wellbeing, and People Development categories.

Finalists in the Health, Safety & Wellbeing category are selected based on their ability to demonstrate an overarching health and safety management culture, as well as leadership and innovation leading to new health and safety schemes. Businesses must also demonstrate clear strategies for sustainable and effective risk management, as well as benefits which are evidenced by measurement criteria.

McCann was shortlisted for its approach to mental health and wellbeing following recent investment in delivering mental health first aider courses as part of its Mental Health and Wellbeing Programme. The company has also delivered bespoke mental health championtraining, with an embedded mental wellbeing policy already in place to set a company-wide approach to supporting others.

McCann has also been named as a finalist within the People Development category. Judges look for businesses who invest in training, reskilling and upskilling their workforces, encourage and develop new talent, create a greater awareness of communities both internally and externally and ensure that diversity and inclusive policies are at the heart of any business strategy.

McCann was shortlisted for its approach to people development across the organisation including its mental health training, commitment to training excellence, CPD strategies and work with apprentices and young people. It was also shortlisted for its CAT and Genny Training Programme – which secured a coveted National Highways Blue Star Award for introducing ‘Genny first’ training on sites to revolutionise how operatives use specialist machinery on site.

Managing Director JohnMcCann, is proud to see the business named as a finalist in both categories following significant investment in its people and processes over a number of years in order to make McCann an employer of choice for those in the civil engineering industry.

“Without our people we don’t have a business,” explains John. “We consider ourselves a home for good talent and in order for talent to thrive, we have to put the right processes and systems in place to support them. That’s why investing in training and support around mental health and wellbeing and making sure we’re developing our people in every possible way, is so important to us,”

He continues, “It’s a real honour for us to be named as part of a strong list of finalists at this year’s Constructing Excellence Awards and we look forward to celebrating the very best in construction for the East Midlands, in June this year.”
