McCann sets company-wide emission target as part of Science Based Target initiative

In line with climate science and the Science Based Target initiative, McCann has set a company-wide emissions target to play its part in regulating a rise in global temperatures.

Back in 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned that global warming must not exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial temperatures to avoid the catastrophic impacts of climate change.

It, therefore, became imperative for us to prioritise our commitment to a low-carbon economy and ensure that we were doing our bit to drive down the impact of greenhouse gas emissions.

In February 2022, McCann’s successfully achieved Carbon Reduce Certification through Achilles, which verified and benchmarked our scope 1, 2 and mandatory scope 3 carbon emissions for the 2020/21 financial year.

As a result of calculating a carbon baseline, we have been able to set a science-based target recognised by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) and the We Mean Business coalition.

The SBTi brings together companies who are passionate about preventing the impact of climate through science-based target setting. It is a collaboration between CDP, World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC).

Eleanor Mangham, Environmental Sustainability and Carbon Reduction Manager at McCann comments, “Climate change is something we take very seriously at McCann and science-based targets create a defined pathway to future-proof business growth, while aiming for a low-carbon economy,”

“We’ve now committed to reducing scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030 – from a 2020 base year – and to measure and reduce our scope 3 emissions,”

“This target is in line with the scale of reductions required to keep global temperature increase below 1.5°C above pre-industrial temperatures to prevent the worst effects of climate change,”

She adds, “ We approved the target using a streamlined target validation route for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This route enables SMEs to bypass the initial step of committing to set a science-based target, as well as the regular target validation process, and to immediately set near-term science-based targets for scope 1 and 2 emissions,”

“Our next step will be to join the Business Ambition for 1.5°C by setting a net-zero science-based target aligned with Science Based Targets Initiative Net-Zero standard,”

“It’s vital that we demonstrate our commitment to sustainability and do what is necessary to reduce the impact of our business on the environment.”
