Go Live! 1st September marks the start of our Liverpool City Council Street Lighting Maintenance contract!

Our team have been working on the mobilisation of McCann’s three-year street lighting maintenance contract since we were awarded the £30 million (£21.5m capital works, and £8.5m maintenance works) contract in June 2025. Liverpool City Council has approximately 68,000 assets, comprising 60,000 lighting units and 8,000 signs and bollards, and McCann will be responsible for a full spectrum of services, from emergency callouts to large-scale infrastructure upgrades.

McCann will work closely with Liverpool City Council and all stakeholders to ensure the city’s street lighting infrastructure is safe, reliable, and future-ready.

After an extensive three-month period mobilising this contract, setting up our new Liverpool team, which includes the onboarding of six TUPE staff, the appointment of some existing team members, and the hiring of new Liverpool-based staff, including Quantity Surveyors, Apprentices, and Technical Administrators, establishing a new depot, ensuring the availability of plant and equipment, and the organisation of stock from the previous contract, our team are ready to hit the ground running.

McCann will begin by working with the council to cleanse the existing asset data, ensuring the information is accurate, reliable, and fit for the future. Alongside this, we’ll update specifications to include the latest technology, such as advanced CMS systems, delivering smarter, more responsive lighting across the city.

In addition, our immediate focus is on maintenance and addressing any outstanding faults encountered during the handover period. By prioritising the fundamentals, we will lay a strong foundation for service improvement throughout the contract.

Speaking about the mobilisation phase and commencement of the contract, which officially launched on September 1st, our Managing Director, John McCann, said, “The McCann team have been applying our expertise in Local Authority service terms to ensure a smooth and comprehensive mobilisation of our Liverpool Contract. Together with the team at Liverpool City Council, we have been working in partnership to put the three-year contract in motion.

We are in the process of setting up a new central depot to service Liverpool and have expanded our team significantly through the recruitment of various key roles, as well as supporting the existing Liverpool team in their transition to joining McCanns. I would like to take another moment to welcome these people to our team. We are happy to have you on board!”

McCann has a proven track record of working with local authorities to enhance performance, improve reliability, and modernise infrastructure. With our experience, expertise, and collaborative approach, McCann is ready to support Liverpool City Council and the local community by providing an energy-efficient, enhanced safety, and future-proofed street lighting infrastructure.

Councillor Daniel Barrington, councillor for the ward of West Derby in Liverpool said, “Liverpool City Council are pleased to be partnering with McCann on our street lighting maintenance contract and are excited to Go Live from 1st September. Working together, we have a shared commitment to improving the street lighting across the city through effective ongoing maintenance and infrastructure upgrades, to benefit the local community with enhanced safety and reliability.

McCann’s have a proven track record of working collaboratively with councils nationwide to enhance vital services, so we are assured that they will be a great partner on this project.”
