Double award nomination for Project Supervisor who “consistently goes above and beyond”

One award nomination is usually reason enough to celebrate but for our Project Supervisor Barrie Bridge, good news comes in twos – after he was recently nominated for a Highways Heroes and CECA Midlands Employee of the Year award.

Having been employed by McCann for over 14 years, Barrie is an integral member of the delivery team and brings valuable experience of working on projects right across the UK. As a Project Supervisor, he is responsible for ensuring the safe and compliant delivery of schemes in line with client budgetary and timescale requirements.

Barrie was recently nominated for both the Highways Heroes and CECA Midlands Employee of the Year awards in recognition of his response to two serious incidents involving members of the public across the Strategic Network.

The first saw Barrie first prioritise the health and safety of a member of the public who had broken down close to a work site on a busy stretch of road. Barrie called for a Traffic Safety Control Officer (TSCO), pushed the broken-down vehicle into a traffic management zone and ensured the member of the public did not cross busy carriageways to retrieve the vehicle.

The second saw Barrie help a female passenger after the vehicle she was travelling in struck a kerb and hit a fixed steel pedestrian barrier – which penetrated the windscreen. Barrie prioritised the wellbeing of the passenger, helping her out of the car before supporting the police with their investigations after it turned out that the male driver was over the drink drive limit.

The Highways Heroes award is supported by National Highways and recognises excellence within the civil engineering sector. It shines a light on those who have gone above and beyond, “whether it’s saving someone from danger or risk of injury, helping a member of the public to safety, or supporting a team member in the face of abuse.” This year’s awards ceremony will take place on the 28th November at the London Hilton, Park Lane.

The CECA Midlands awards will take place on 12th September at the Burlington Hotel in Birmingham. These awards celebrate civil engineering projects and the people working right across the sector within the Midlands. The Employee of the Year award specifically recognises the excellent work and dedication of individuals – specifically their innovation, thinking, dedication and ability. Finalists are judged on all round ability, not just academic and work-related achievements, but also their enthusiasm for their employer organisation and the wider industry.

Barrie will hope to be a winner at both prestigious events and for our Managing Director John McCann, it is no surprise to see him recognised in this way.

“Barrie is someone who consistently goes above and beyond in the workplace,” explains John. “He not only takes his role seriously – applying best practice and exemplary standards in everything he does – but he also thinks wider than the project at hand,”

“The two incidents which have seen him nominated for these awards are a shining example of his ability to see the bigger picture. He always considers the safety of those around him and in the case of these examples, he has potentially saved lives,”

John continues, “I want to extend my personal thanks to Barrie for his steadfast commitment and wish him many congratulations on behalf of the entire McCann team for this deserved recognition. We will be right behind him at both ceremonies and look forward to seeing his name up in lights.”
