Work experience opportunities created for local school students at our Nottingham head office

We’ve been inundated with enquiries from local students in recent months looking for the opportunity to complete work experience with McCann at our Nottingham head office.

As a result of the high levels of interest from students attending schools across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, we’ve subsequently launched a brand-new work experience scheme.

So far, the scheme has seen us welcomed five young people aged between 14 and 17 into the business for a few weeks to get to grips with life in the world of civil and electrical engineering.

Each student took part in an induction process with our Quality and Lean Manager, Ben Feltham, providing background on the history of the business as well as information about the services we deliver to our clients. They also completed a young person’s risk assessment in order to learn about keeping themselves and others safe, before being assigned a mentor for the entirety of their time with the business.

Students have learnt about internal functions and processes including finance, accounting and contract valuations, as well as on-site activities such as quantity surveying, planning lifts with cranes, crane selection and determining the center of gravity in composite loads.

They’ve also taken part in site visits where possible, with some students completing a tour of our Peter James Home’s Bestwood development to learn about the processes for a new-build home. Others studied existing lighting in Nottingham city center and used our lighting software to design lighting levels and CAD to produce street lighting design drawings.

Speaking about the experience opportunities open to students, Ben said, “We were both surprised and delighted with the sudden influx of enquiries we’ve received this year – both through the careers section of our website and from people knocking on our door!”

“We decided that based on the wide range of work we do, we could provide a variety of valuable work experience opportunities and successfully match members of our team with each enquiry,”

“The fact that students have recognised us as a place to learn about the working world and specifically, civil and electrical engineering, is testament to our reputation. Based on the number of applications received this year, we’ve now decided to make our work experience provision a mainstay within the business – working around school timetables to offer exciting opportunities to future generations.”
